About Élégies

A collection of drawings, collages and reinterpreted found objects, created as a kind of stretching exercise during the lengthy marathon of painting. Poking through the visual garbage of the week, directing a cut-up of the daily, medial noise.

Exhibited at Ninasagt Galerie in April 2017 and at HVW8 Gallery in August 2017. Please find the exhibition text by Teresa Köster below. Accompanying Fanzine unfortunately sold out.

Gleichnamiges Fanzine leider vergriffen.

Sebastian Haslauer’s new solo show is going to be capricious. Not the artist, but his artwork changes its mood from page to page, from motif to motif. Created mainly within the last three years during restless breaks from painting they are alternating images of the not less alternating world growing out of modern mass media and found objects: the lament of the 21st century – the “Elegies” of our present age. The poems in which Ovid, Goethe or Schiller once articulated their melancholy and grievance find a less sentimental but a not less sensual immediate translation in Haslauer’s work. In the homonymous exhibition Sebastian Haslauer and HVW8 Berlin work together for the first time showing around 100 drawings, collages and objects trouvés.

Sebastian Haslauer might be many things but definitely not easy to categorize. He is an artist, an illustrator and a lot in between. If painting is his highest ideal, the gestured abstraction is here filled with a world of content. Over months one layer is put here on top of another, – content on top of prior content, colour on top of colour, thoughts on top of thoughts. Though in the process of getting there Haslauer turns away from time to time. Then he digs through his magazine collection, tears out pages, decontextualizes, brings together new things, takes to the floor and the colour. Instinctively Haslauer produces non-stop in a Kippenberger mannerism including and drawing from everything he can find in everyday life. With pleasure he rummages through the zeitgeist and comments on his immediate reaction with intuitively composed collages, drawings, cartoons, found objects or even poems. Here he is angry, funny and free.

Contrary to the paintings Sebastian Haslauer’s “Elegies” allow a single thought to be equal to a final piece of art: Brief thoughts and discoveries are visualized and moods that live up to the Berlin bluntness. They say what they mean. They are honest and spontaneous, don’t want to be but are – even imperfect, bittersweet or from time to time embarrassing when loosing themselves in vulgar jokes.

Right here within the supposed carefreeness lies both their greatest irritation and their greatest strength. Here, occupying the entire gallery space in a loose Petersburg hanging is where Haslauer turns the hidden part of his creative process from the inside out. The part that mainly works towards producing a complex painting meanwhile however creates a fundamentally different, a more questioning art. One that is searching for a dialog with the world through the fusion of life and art: How far can one push humour and rage? How many jokes and provocations can art endure and especially each one of us? Not the artist himself offers the answers but the habits are now suddenly dislocated – its up to the viewer.
